Gabriele Palladino è un genetista quarantenne italiano ex cattolico che si è stabilito da anni negli Stati Uniti. Spera di arricchirsi grazie alle attività coperte che svolge in un centro di ricerca privato, ma, proprio quando le sue speranze sembrano naufragare, compare un personaggio che gli propone, per conto di un'associazione senza nome, di clonare a pagamento un morto, partendo dal suo sangue. Gabriele vorrebbe rifiutare; ma se il successo gli portasse finalmente tanto denaro da cambiargli la vita, il gioco varrebbe la candela. E se poi il morto fosse davvero l'uomo della Sindone, perché impedire alla scienza di offrire un'altra chance all'umanità?

Il successo ottenuto con uno stratagemma non gli porta il denaro pattuito e non lo appaga, così che Gabriele intraprende un viaggio di ritorno in Italia e dentro sé stesso, alla ricerca della vera origine del sangue su cui ha lavorato e dei veri scopi dell'associazione. L'indagine lo porta alla scoperta di verità inattese, finché una minacciosa catena di omicidi fra loro collegati lo obbliga a cercare disperatamente una via d'uscita, anche a rischio della propria sopravvivenza.

L'intento del romanzo, ambientato in un futuro a noi vicino, è quello di presentare una trama coinvolgente, che nello stesso tempo affronti temi di stringente attualità in questo inizio di terzo millennio, in cui il rapporto tra scienza e fede viene spesso giocato nell'ambito della bioetica.

Gabriele Palladino is an ex seminary student turned ambitious genetic researcher who opts to join the great brain drain of scientists and leave his native Italy to further his chances in the US. He works for a company in California, Biogas, whose official goal is research into the effects of pollution on the animal genome but unofficially Gabriele is the key component of a team which has developed a technique for cloning anencephalic human embryos for the lucrative organ transplant market. When he finds his discovery has been appropriated by his superior, he agrees to a meeting with a stranger representing a mysterious organization who offers him a new job...

In a secret lab in Nevada, Gabriele successfully produces a cloned embryo from the blood sample, but when the five million dollars he has been promised fails to arrive, he undertakes an investigation into the association which leads him back to the Turin of his youth and later to Florida and the Midwest.

What can possibly connect a group of Italian priests, a neo-nazi Texan, the followers of black nationalist Marcus Garvey, satanists, as well as a secret Jewish society? His search sets off a series of vicious murders, endangering his own life as well as that of his young Italian wife. As he returns to the US to teach bioethics in an obscure college in Kansas, he contemplates how he can stop the chain of evil he has unleashed.
